Salem Art Works
Description
Founded by Anthony Cafritz in 2005 on the site of a former dairy farm, Salem Art Works in beautiful upstate New York supports emerging and established artists dedicated to creating new, progressive work, and promotes understanding and appreciation of contemporary art within the region. Based upon this tenet, SAW offers opportunities in four focal areas:Â cultural events, exhibitions, educational workshops, and artist programs.
The rural landscape of Salem Art Works sprawls an impressive 119 acres, hosting a rotating roster of sculptures by regional, national, and international artists throughout the Cary Hill Sculpture Park. The public is invited to experience Cary Hill Sculpture Park at their own pace from dawn to dusk, 365 days a year. Three seasons of the year, vehicles can easily drive up Cary Hill and park at the top to take in panoramic views of beautiful Washington County, NY. From here, there is also access to a network of trails winding between Cary Hill summit and the Back 40. Hiking, horse-back riding, running, biking, sledding, cross-country skiing, snow-shoeing, downhill skiing, snowboarding, and picnicking are just some examples of the many ways you can enjoy our grounds and trail system.
SAW staffs and manages Glass, Ceramics, Blacksmithing, Welding, and Metalcasting Studios on site, each directed by a year-round Studio Director. During the summer season, SAW offers a limited number of subsidized Artist-in-Residence programs - as well as self-funded Independent Artist residencies - for artists of all ages, backgrounds, and career stages, working in nearly any mode or medium imaginable. Throughout the year there are youth programs, public classes and workshops, exhibitions, and other events.
