The Original Henry Knox Cannon Trail: A Frigid Feat of Courage and Grit

A Knox Trail marker outside the library in Hudson Falls, NY

In the 1920s, New York honored this portion of history by purchasing and placing 30 identical markers along Henry Knox’s route, each reading: “Through this place passed General Henry Knox in the winter of 1775-1776 to deliver to General George Washington at Cambridge the Train of Artillery from Fort Ticonderoga used to force the British army to evacuate Boston.” Several of these markers still reside within Washington County, including one in Hudson Falls and in Fort Edward, each a part of one of the earliest heritage trails implemented in the United States.

The Henry Knox Trail celebrates a remarkable feat of logistical genius carried out in the winter of 1775-1776. Two hundred and fifty years ago, Colonel Henry Knox, his 19-year-old brother and his men transported many heavy loads of of artillery from Fort Ticonderoga to Massachusetts. This epic undertaking, spanning over 300 miles of unforgiving terrain, was crucial to the Continental Army’s success in forcing the British out of Boston. Through slippery ice, heavy snow and freezing water, these men transported over 120,000 pounds of weaponry by oxen cart, boat and sled, never letting the enormity or difficulty of their task get in the way.

Naturally, Fort Edward played a vital role in this incredible journey. As a strategic point along the Hudson River, it served as both a significant stopover and a difficult challenge for Knox’s expedition. During the course of their journey, the Knox group had to cross the frozen Hudson four times, twice having to retrieve a fallen cannon from the river’s icy depths.

In fact, the very ground you’ll stand on during the reenactment bears witness to the efforts and determination of those who carved a path for American independence. You can almost imagine the creaking of sleds, the shouts of the men, and the biting winter air as you experience the recreation of this historic passage!

Come see history brought to life at the Henry Knox Trail Reenactment, starting at 9 AM on Dec. 13, 2025.
