A BRIEF HISTORY OF DRESDEN

1700s

During the late colonial period, Dresden was on “the Great War Path” connecting French and British colonies; it has remained a hub for travelers ever since. It was first settled in 1784, and early industries included lumbering and maple syrup preparation.

1800s

The completion of the
Champlain Canal increased transportation and carried folks through Dresden, known then as “one of the most beautiful towns in the Adirondacks.”

1900s

An eastward expansion of the
Adirondack Park brought Lake George and its communities, including Dresden, within park boundaries in 1931.

Today

While remote, the town remains a major tourism destination for outdoor enthusiasts.
It’s home to trailheads for a number of hiking trails, including Adirondack High Peaks, boat launches on Lake Champlain and Lake George, and native wildlife.
