Starting where the Poultney River divides New York from Vermont, you can follow U.S. Route 4 southwest across northern Washington County to South Bay, just south of Lake Champlain.
Our suggested route begins in Low Hampton and heads toward Whitehall, but the experience is just as enjoyable in reverse!

Low Hampton & Hampton, NY
With a slight detour north or south from Route 4, you’ll find some of the most unique attractions in the area!
North of Low Hampton, you and your family can visit Carver Falls to breathe in some nature and check out a hydropower dam. Or, you could stop by the William Miller historic sites to learn more about rural life in the 1800s!
To the South, Hampton is home to Milestone Golf Course, rated the best golf course in Washington County in 2022. This is a great place to spend part of your day hitting the links. If you’re looking for a fun, alternative way to experience this area, pop by Johnson & Son Bikeworks to rent or buy a bike for your visit!
Along Route 4, one of the first stops is Pattie’s Patch, open seasonally from May – October. Here, you can pick up some fresh produce and seasonal plants!
Then, you’ll want to swing by Fairview Orchard for their fan-favorite cider donuts! While there, you can also pick some apples yourself, or stock up on homemade apple cider.
If you plan your timing correctly, you might be able to make it to an auction at Nicholas Auctions! With a professional auction atmosphere inside a historic barn, they carry items including antiques, vintage collectibles, artwork, and more.
For more artwork and antique fun, continue down the road to Fort Ann Antiques and State Line Flea Market, where you’re sure to find some delightful treasures.
Whitehall, NY
Once you cross the Champlain Canal into central Whitehall, there are a number of shopping opportunities and attractions to entertain the whole family! Known as the “Birthplace of the US Navy,” Whitehall has much to offer adventurous locals and curious visitors alike, from interesting architecture to unique businesses.
Putorti’s Broadway Market in historic downtown Whitehall is a great place to grab a quick bite to eat or stock up for a picnic! Nearby, get your geek on by visiting Retro Hoarders Gaming Store or Freakopolis Geekery. Or, discover more neat antiques just down the road at Carol’s Collectibles & Antiques.
It’s beautiful in Whitehall! Why not breathe in the stunning scenery and picnic at the Skenesborough Waterfront Community Park? The Park is also home to the remains of the U.S.S. Ticonderoga and the Skenesborough Museum, so check them out while in town! If you’re lucky, you may also find one of many interesting events taking place, like the Sasquatch Festival & Calling Contest.
Need to regain some energy after all that shopping and exploring? Visit Historic Grounds for some fresh coffee and baked goods! Note: If you’re planning on making a stop at Historic Grounds in Whitehall, be sure to swing by before they close in the early afternoon.
