A Brief History of Dresden New York

1700s

During the late colonial period, Dresden was on “the Great War Path” connecting French and British colonies; it has remained a hub for travelers ever since. It was first settled in 1784, and early industries included lumbering and maple syrup preparation.

1800s

The completion of the Champlain Canal increased transportation and carried folks through Dresden, known then as “one of the most beautiful towns in the Adirondacks.”

1900s

An eastward expansion of the Adirondack Park brought Lake George and its communities, including Dresden, within park boundaries in 1931.

While remote, the town remains a major tourism destination for outdoor enthusiasts. It’s home to trailheads for a number of hiking trails, including Adirondack high peaks, boat launches on Lake Champlain and Lake George, and native wildlife.

Washington County's public park on Lake George at Huletts Landing in the Town of Dresden. 2021 Schedule June 26th - September 6th open 7 days a week Hours Picnic Area: 8am – 8pm Beach: 11am – 7pm (lifeguards on duty at this time) Park Features Basketball, volleyball, horseshoes, swings, tennis courts ($4/hour for reserved court time), swimming and a dock for launching canoes, kayaks or small hand carried boats. General Admission: FREE
