The Beer-Brewing Process
At Scotlander Brewing Company, the brewing process is a labor of love. Drawing on 10+ years of experience, Scotlander enjoys the creative freedom that comes from using locally-sourced hops and malts to create a variety of unique and flavorful beers. From classic styles like blondes and Irish stouts to seasonal and experimental brews, they produce a variety of delicious beverages throughout the year!
Of course, it starts with the grain. Many believe that’s the heart of the beer. To maintain a true local farm-to-glass experience, the majority of grain used by Scotlander is from within New York state – often from as nearby as Easton.
After harvest, the grain is malted, dried and ground down into what’s called grist, a process which opens up the grain kernels. Afterward, it gets “mashed” which involves soaking the grain in water like oatmeal, converting the starches into sugars. That sugar water, called wort, is boiled to remove any impurities. Then, hops and other flavor-adding ingredients are mixed in.
Similarly, the majority of hops used by Scotlander Brewing Company are grown in New York state, some from their on-site hopyard. After the hop cones are harvested, they’re dried and turned into a pellet form for ease of use.
At that point, Scotlander cools the mixture down and transfers it to the fermentation vat. That’s when the yeast is added, which eats up the sugar to produce alcohol and carbon dioxide as by-products. Once fermentation is complete, it’s moved to a carbonation tank to get it nice and bubbly, and then it goes into kegs and out the tap!
The Origins of Scotlander Brewing Company
Like many people, Sarah and Matt Puhl fell in love with the countryside of Washington County. Neither a New York native, they came to the area to enjoy a different pace of life after living together in the hustle & bustle of Boston, MA. Now, they’re making a name for themselves as a craft brewery & taproom within the previously-dry town of Argyle, NY!
It started with Matt’s home brewing hobby, but quickly grew as the couple embraced the farming lifestyle. Now, this also includes a Christmas tree farm as well as a large hop-yard containing several different varieties!
Additionally, Scotlander Brewing Company serves as a Harvest Host. If you love RV camping, you won’t want to miss a stay at the scenic spot near the taproom!
