A BRIEF HISTORY OF HARTFORD
1700s
Many of the early settlers of Hartford came from parts of New England. The town itself was originally part of the Provincial Patent (26,000 acres), which also included the present towns of Putnam, Fort Ann, Dresden, and a portion of Kingsbury. The town of Hartford was set off from the larger group in 1793.
1800s
Hartford is home to two locations on the National Register of Historic Places: the Elisha Straight House—a 19th century home used as a local recruitment center for the Union Army—and the Hartford Baptist Church & Cemetery, a Victorian Gothic-style church and an adjoining cemetery with almost two centuries of graves, including those of early Hartford settlers and some Revolutionary War veterans.
Today
Today, the Elisha Straight House is home to Hartford Museum, which chronicles the history of the town and surrounding area during the 19th century. In addition, you can visit the Howard Hanna Memorial Civil War Enlistment Center, the last remaining Civil War enlistment center in New York State.
