History of the Skenesborough Museum

The building in which the museum is located occupies a 1917 reinforced concrete Canal Terminal building. Following this usage, it was later used as a shed for the Town of Whitehall until New York State had plans to demolish it. On June 28th, 1959 it was decided the building should be used for something with a historic purpose in Whitehall, so plans were made to create the Skenesborough Museum. In 1960, the Town of Whitehall received permission to continue using the building – as long as it remained a museum.

What happened to Skenesborough?

Did you know? While the township of Whitehall played a significant role in the Revolutionary War, back then it was known as something else – Skenesborough! In fact, it was named in 1759 after its founder, Philip Skene, who was both a businessman and British Loyalist.

After the Revolutionary War was won, Skenesborough was renamed to Whitehall, reflecting the town’s aspiration to continue becoming a thriving part of the Northeast economy. This renaming marked a new chapter for the town, showcasing both its historic significance and its bright future.

The Birthplace of Who?!?

Whitehall proudly claims the title of “Birthplace of the U.S. Navy,” a reference to the large number of vessels constructed in the area in 1776 under the command of Benedict Arnold.

Skenesborough Museum truly showcases this in some of their exhibits. Their fascinating collection of nautical artifacts highlights the maritime activity that once occurred in this area. If you’re looking for unbeatable insight into Whitehall’s maritime heritage, you’ll want to view the museum’s collection, which includes models of ships, navigational tools, and even items recovered from the Lake Champlain waters!

And, there’s one exhibit you can’t miss! A popular artifact on display is the U.S.S. Ticonderoga, whose remains lie in a safe but visible area. This ship was constructed in Whitehall, the first in the Navy by that name. Though only part of her remains today, this exhibit allows viewers the chance to  picture the ship in its full glory within its natural setting. Today, the U.S.S. Ticonderoga continues to serve as a testament to the legacy of Whitehall in our American history.
