How It’s Made: High-Quality Goat Milk Soap
The Sperry family takes immense pride in their soap-making process, meticulously selecting only the freshest and finest ingredients. Their goats, raised with utmost care and affection, graze on lush green pastures, ensuring that their milk is rich in essential nutrients. Then, once or twice per day, the does are milked using a special machine while they’re given delicious treats.
Then, the goat milk is mixed with sodium hydroxide and the fats are added in! Sperry Family Farm uses 5 fats: coconut oil, shea butter, olive oil, rice bran oil and castor oil. When those are mixed, saponification occurs, a scientific reaction that produces soap as a result. Then, that is poured into different colors and scents are added. After the soap is poured into the molds, they sit for 24 hours before getting cut into bars. The bars then sit on a curing rack for a full month before they’re packaged and ready to send to the store!
So what’s the fuss about goat milk soap? In the last few years, it’s been gaining in popularity as a natural and gentle alternative to many commercial soaps! This is largely because it provides deep moisturization while being gentle on sensitive or acne-prone skin. And without extraneous additives and fillers!

The Origins of Sperry Family Farm
Originally from Saratoga County, Dorothy Sperry and her husband John moved to their current farm in Argyle, NY with the goal of becoming self-sustaining. By then, the property had been abandoned for awhile, so the couple set to work renovating its historic barns.
As it often does, their farmstead began with a few chickens and a large vegetable garden. Then, the first few goats moved in to bring in the dairy aspect! At first, the Sperrys used the milk primarily for their own dairy needs at home, but soon Dorothy began making goat milk soap. Then over time, the farm began to make more products, such as lotion and beard balm, that fit alongside their increasingly-popular soaps.
As for what Dorothy loves about it, besides the inherent happiness that a herd of goats brings? There’s a deeply thoughtful and creative process behind Sperry Family Farm‘s delightful scents and colorful designs, a joy which users feel every time they use the products.
