EXPLORE EASTON
A BRIEF HISTORY OF EASTON
1700s
The town of Easton was formed in 1789 from the towns of Saratoga and Stillwater. Much of Easton’s history is connected with the Religious Society of Friends, also known as Quakers. As such, the town played a significant role in the Underground Railroad Movement, acting as a major route through Washington County, and
featuring several safe houses.
1800s
Women’s Rights leader, Susan B. Anthony, spent many of her early years in the Easton are. At 13, she joined the Easton Society of Friends (Quakers). And later, she taught school in Easton for $1.00 a week.
1900s
Easton was also the birthplace of folk artist, Grandma Moses (Anna Mary Robertson Moses), known for capturing the life she knew as a frugal farm woman. Although Moses was creative in her home, it wasn’t until the age of 78 that she discovered folk painting.
Today
The small town center of Easton sits above the rolling hills of Washington County, and many historic buildings remain in use. Our agricultural community is vast, and features
everything from dairy and cattle farms, wineries and distilleries, a ski resort, and much more.
