A BRIEF HISTORY OF WHITE CREEK
1700s
White Creek’s first permanent residence was built in 1757 and still stands today! The first settlers in the present hamlet of White Creek were Quakers. White Creek rapidly became a center of regional commerce late in the eighteenth century.
1800s
Farm productivity increased
dramatically in the 1830’s with the inventions of the automatic reaper and the steel plow. As the railroad made its way into the village, Cambridge-North White Creek established itself as a local center for agriculture, lumber and other industries. White Creek was officially established in 1816
when the town of Cambridge was subdivided.
1900s
One of White Creek’s most unique attractions, the New Skete Monastery, was built in the hills just
outside the village of Cambridge, in 1967, followed by the women’s monastery two years later. Their churches, gardens, and hiking trails are open to visitors, parishioners, and tour groups. The nuns are also well-known for their cheesecakes!

Nestled in the foothills of the Taconic Mountains, White Creek remains an inspiring agricultural community ripe with outdoor recreation options.
